This book is part of my response to the sad stories of swimmers who have entered open water swimming events they were not prepared for, resulting in unhappy outcomes. I have heard these stories from swimmers, from coaches, from families, and from race staff who had to come to the rescue. This book is a compilation of the topics I have discussed with countless swimmers who have come to me for help over the years, topics that cover virtually all the basic aspects of swimming and racing in open water. This book is a part of my effort to reduce the frequency of sad stories and increase the pleasant ones.
